On Oct. 1st, 2012 I left Charlotte, NC on a cross country journey to Portland, OR. I ended up in Champaign, IL and I love it! I'm a cismale, my preferred gender pronouns are HE/Him/His, but I'm totally down with whatever you want to call me. I'm looking forward to meeting more of my fellow bloggers, photographers, and artist to learn all I can about the creative life. I mostly post photos, videos, and blog entries about my experiences. Recently I have begun geeking out on glitch art and making my own animated gifs. I love feedback, and I feel that creativity flows much more freely in large numbers. If you would like to contact me directly for any reason just email me at email@example.com. Thank you and happy creating to you all!
I’ve Just Read
Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex by Mary Roach
A few years ago I read Stiff by Mary Roach and absolutely adored it, so a couple of weeks ago whilst checking the offerings of the Kindle Fire lending library I came across Bonk and my decision was made. The fact that is was about sex was purely a bonus!
This book covers the work of Kinsey, Masters and Johnson, along with many other sex researchers past and present. Mostly covering human research studies and a few animal studies thrown in for good measure, the chapter on pig insemination is hoot! She also visits a sex toy manufacturer’s R&D department, and participates in some of the studies being done currently (for the scientists, not the sex toy manufacturer).
Mary Roach has a terrific writing style that really draws you in and makes you want to stay. I feel like I’m listening to her tell me her experiences over a cup of coffee or on the phone. She is very thorough in her research and puts in as much face time as they will let her get away with. The footnotes are the best part of reading. I had no idea footnotes could be funny, do not neglect the footnotes!
That’s all I have really. I mean I could talk about this book for hours, but I don’t want to give anything away. I can guarantee you will be looked at funny in the coffee shop when you uncontrollably burst out in laughter reading this book.
